A Bistro is not a Brasserie! The terms are sometimes used interchangeably or imprecisely but in France, birthplace of both, they almost always retain their original meanings.

Brasserie that we can translate by Brewery is Alsatian in origin (Alsace is located on France's eastern border). The original brasseries were either attached to beer-making facilities and they were owned by brewerers.

Bistro is a small and intimate place, usually a family-owned — monsieur cooks while madame runs the dining room and keeps an eye on the cash register. Food is simple but tasty.
